Just rage-LOLing with a few thousand fed-up unladies at Atlanta’s abortion rally on Saturday. (Not pictured: The smattering of white women who still haven’t gotten the memo on pussyhats and Handmaid’s bonnets.) Anyone else get out for #BansOffOurBodies?
patreon: Dismantling White Feminism with Saadia Khan
On the latest Patreon episode, it’s not just me!!! I was thrilled to chat with Saadia Khan, creator and host of Immigrantly, "an independent, WOC led, boundary-pushing, border-crossing podcast that gives diverse voices and stories a home." Obviously, she's a kindred unladylike spirit.
Saadia shares about moving to the US from Pakistan in the early 2000s and how the aftershock of the 2016 election led her to create the podcast. Then, we dig in on abortion rights, white feminism, privilege checking and as Saadia puts it, "the general messiness of being human."
💖 THANK YOU, THANK YOU to this week’s newest dearest patrons, Cassandra and Noelle. 💖
need to know:
Abortion Rights = Fat Rights. (Burnt Toast) Virginia Sole-Smith lays out the fuckery of weight limits on emergency contraception effectiveness and the anti-fat bias baked into reproductive healthcare at large. Highly recommend reading!
US Press Sec Jean-Pierre has her work cut out for her. (The Guardian) For just one example, her first day on the job, Karine Jean-Pierre honored the significance of her appointment then moved onto addressing the racist massacre in Buffalo, NY. Also, whatever the sociological term is for “white institutions promoting women and POC to public-facing positions that come with pre-existing shitstorms,” this feels vaguely that.
“Everything is as OK as it could be.” (NPR) That’s the less than reassuring status update Brittney Griner’s Moscow lawyer offered on Friday after a Russian court extended her pre-trial detention for another 30 days and rejected her request to be transferred to house arrest. While I’m no expert in diplomacy and foreign policy, it’s also less than reassuring that it took until May 3 for the US State Department to classify Griner as wrongfully detained.
Nail techs, assemble. (The Cut) If you remember the 2015 NYT expose or Unladylike’s episode on manicures, you know that the nail salon industry has a labor abuse problem. Here’s how nail techs have been organizing—and making it through a pandemic—since.
Depp-heads keep on meme-ing. (Embedded) Kate Lindsay perfectly sums up my 👀 at the metastasizing memeification of Depp v. Heard and intimate partner violence. (Also wtf, WaPo.)
unladies are saying:
I don't think pretending women and female animals are the same is a good plan. All animals should not have to suffer, that's it.
- listener + patron Debbie re: vegan feminism, which I’d love to unpack more on a future main feed ep
